West University Place discontinued pickleball play on two western courts at Wier Park as of Oct. 23. The change follows a recommendation from the city’s Parks and Recreation Board. City officials stated in an announcement that the decision rests on a new acoustical study and resident feedback.

The acoustical study determined that pickleball noise stands out more than sounds from tennis or basketball. The report noted these noises are particularly noticeable to nearby residents, especially during repeated play. This finding influenced the board’s move to alter how the two specific courts are used.

Pickleball remains permitted at Wier and Judson Parks between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. The city operates under a trial period for rule modifications that began on June 22. During this experimental window, players must use quieter equipment after 8 p.m. to reduce noise levels.

Officials evaluated several alternatives before finalizing the recommendation. They considered installing sound barriers around the courts but found the solution unfeasible. The required height for effective sound mitigation and the associated construction costs made the barriers a poor financial fit. The board also reviewed stricter mandates for specialized quiet equipment. Officials said these tools do not offer players the same performance as standard gear.

The Parks and Recreation Board voted to enact the trial period for modified rules in May. The current rules remain in effect until the board meets again on Nov. 4. At that session, members will discuss next steps for the conditions surrounding the courts at Wier and Judson Parks.

The Parks and Recreation Department plans to re-stripe the two discontinued pickleball courts for tennis play only. City staff will notify users and residents when the repainting work is scheduled to begin.
