Anthropic’s New Agent Targets Business Automation, Not Personal Errands
By focusing on professional workflows and background task execution, Claude Duet seeks to carve out a distinct niche in the crowded AI assistant market.

The artificial intelligence landscape is currently saturated with a steady stream of new personal assistants and productivity tools, creating a competitive environment where differentiation is increasingly difficult. Anthropic has entered this fray with a new application called Claude Duet, aiming to capture user attention by positioning the product as a specialized tool for professionals and small businesses rather than a general-purpose personal companion.
The core tension in this launch lies in the shifting market focus from simple chatbots to autonomous agents capable of acting on behalf of users. Anthropic has explicitly distinguished Duet from personal agents like Instinct, noting that the new tool is not designed for handling everyday errands or booking tickets. Furthermore, unlike some competitors, Duet does not provide a live visual feed of its browser usage, prioritizing background efficiency over transparency in that specific area.
Instead of managing personal logistics, Duet is engineered to automate and manage professional tasks. The agent can construct daily briefings, generate data dashboards, and propose specific actions based on user information. It operates by executing tasks in the background within its own virtual machine, allowing users to continue their work. If a decision is required, the agent pauses and returns to the user for approval before proceeding.
This strategic pivot mirrors broader industry trends, as many rivals are also emphasizing business use cases. While Meta’s Muse remains primarily a personal assistant, the company has introduced a version tailored for small businesses with external app connections. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots has adopted a business-oriented approach through integrations with professional software. Anthropic is betting that by focusing on proactive recommendations and monitoring ongoing tasks, Duet will stand out in the B2B sector.
Under the hood, the application is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model. It boasts the ability to connect to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. The agent can also execute online purchases using Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, although Anthropic emphasizes that sensitive steps, such as payments, will always require explicit user consent. Notably, the agent is restricted from trading securities or transferring funds between accounts.
To address privacy concerns inherent in autonomous agents, Anthropic introduced a new classifier that scans every message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the system is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification documents. This layer of security is intended to build trust among professional users who may be hesitant to share detailed business data with an AI tool.
Claude Duet is currently available in a research preview for Pro and Max customers. The application can be accessed via iOS and Android devices, as well as through the web interface at Claude.ai. To test the new agent, users must currently join a waitlist, indicating that Anthropic is managing demand while the platform stabilizes.
