The final stretch of the midterm election season has been defined by an intense financial battle, with Elon Musk injecting massive sums of personal wealth to support Republican candidates. A report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday reveals that his political committee, America PAC, received more than $76 million in the first half of October. This significant influx of cash underscores the billionaire's continued heavy-handed involvement in the national political landscape as voting day approaches.
Of that recent donation, the group spent nearly $43 million in that same two-week period. As the campaign enters its final leg, the committee still holds close to $47 million in cash reserves. The bulk of this new spending was directed toward the highly contested Texas Senate race, which absorbed $15.2 million. This amount is double what the organization spent in that state throughout the entire summer, signaling a strategic shift in focus for the final weeks of the campaign.
The Texas spending was sharply divided, with $12.4 million allocated to attack Democratic candidate James Talarico and $2.8 million used to promote Republican Ken Paxton. Daily filings indicate that an additional $9.1 million has been spent against Talarico since the initial report. In total, the PAC has spent nearly $28 million opposing him this cycle, which accounts for about 40 percent of all its candidate-related expenditures. The organization also marked a change in advertising strategy, spending $11.4 million on digital ads in those two weeks, a figure nearly equal to its combined spending on mail and texting.
These contributions are part of a larger pattern. According to an analysis of federal filings, Musk has donated more than $445 million to various Republican political groups this election cycle, making him the largest known individual donor. Over $165 million of that total has flowed to America PAC since July. While the committee declined to comment on the new figures, Musk has been vocal on social media, posting on X that there is something deeply wrong with Talarico and calling him a creep without providing evidence.
The stakes for Musk extend beyond a single state. If Democrats secure the House, key committee leaders have indicated they will investigate his role in the Department of Government Efficiency and his companies' federal contracts. California Democrat Zoe Lofgren has described the number of potential conflicts of interest as astounding. Furthermore, a group of Silicon Valley Democrats sent a letter to the White House on Friday demanding scrutiny of federal funding awarded to Musk’s businesses, specifically targeting restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine.
Despite the heavy spending, the Texas race remains uncertain. A recent Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely voters found Talarico leading Paxton by two points, a margin within the three-point error range. This closeness highlights why the final wave of advertising and donations has become so critical for both sides.
