Apple TV subscribers in the United States are now streaming Formula 1 coverage with Dolby Atmos audio, a technical first for the sport that launched this week. The upgrade coincides with the United States Grand Prix, which will be the initial event to utilize the spatial sound format. Apple and Dolby Laboratories confirmed the partnership earlier in October, specifying that the audio enhancement would debut with the Austin race weekend.

The company describes the new audio experience as a tool to immerse viewers in the full spectrum of race weekend sounds. This includes team radio communications, commentator analysis, engine noise, and pit lane activity. Apple positions the combination of Dolby Atmos sound and Dolby Vision video as a method to provide high-fidelity visuals and audio that place fans directly within the action.

The schedule for the Austin weekend is already underway. First practice concluded earlier in the day, but the remaining sessions are still available to stream. Practice 2 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. On Saturday, October 24, Practice 3 begins at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying at 5 p.m. ET. The main race is set to start on Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.

To celebrate the audio debut, Apple is hosting a live viewing event at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. The venue will screen Sunday's race for attendees. This store recently hosted CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien on Friday for the launch of the iPhone Duo, marking a busy week for the location.

Apple has also updated its mapping tools for the event. The company expanded its Detailed City Experience to Austin and added a specific map of the Circuit of The Americas to Apple Maps. This map includes turn numbers, grandstand locations, and 3D landmarks to assist fans in navigating the venue.

Access to the broadcast requires an Apple TV subscription, which costs $14.99 per month. Viewers can also access the service through the Apple One bundle. The platform currently hosts a library of original series and films, including Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.

The shift to spatial audio represents a measurable change in the broadcast technology available to US-based viewers. The implementation began on Friday, October 23, aligning the audio upgrade with the final stages of the race preparation schedule in Texas.
