The death of a 36-year-old British mother in the Bahamas on Tuesday is now the focus of a police investigation, with authorities examining the circumstances under which she died while attempting to help her two children who had been pulled away by a strong current during a snorkelling outing near North Bimini.

The woman was snorkelling with her husband and their two boys off the southern point of North Bimini when the current caught the children and moved them away from the group. Police reported that as she moved to reach her sons, she too was carried off by the water. Both boys were subsequently recovered from the sea.

The police force in the Bahamas issued a statement on social media detailing a preliminary timeline. Around 10am on Tuesday, officers at the Alice Town police station received a report that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. When officers arrived at that location, they learned she had already been transported to the nearby clinic for treatment.

Emergency measures were taken at the dock and later at the medical facility, including CPR, but a doctor at the clinic ultimately declared her dead. Investigators have stated that they do not currently suspect foul play in connection with the incident. An autopsy is planned to determine the precise medical cause of her passing.

Britain's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office acknowledged the case, saying it was aware of the situation. A spokesperson for the office said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." The spokesperson further noted that officials are coordinating with local authorities and extending support to the family members involved.

The location of the incident, Bimini, is a cluster of islands situated between Andros and Miami, making it the closest Bahamian territory to the mainland United States. Beyond its geography, the islands hold historical significance as a former residence of Ernest Hemingway and are also noted for hosting a facility dedicated to shark research.

The Royal Bahamas police force has not yet released further details regarding the ongoing investigation. No additional information has been provided concerning the family or the specific medical findings that would be detailed in the upcoming autopsy report.

The investigation into the events of last Tuesday remains in its early stages. Authorities have not announced when they expect to conclude their inquiry into the incident or when any findings will be released to the public.
