Latvia's National Armed Forces recovered the wreckage of a drone in the Alūksne district on Saturday, October 24. The debris marks the first concrete evidence of an incident that began on October 18, when the unmanned aerial vehicle entered Latvian airspace.
The initial detection occurred after a report of a loud noise resembling an explosion. The military and the State Police began a search for a crash site but halted the operation after two days. Officials stated that available data at the time was insufficient to determine the nature of the event.
The discovery triggers an active investigation into the specific circumstances of the crash. An internal review has also commenced to evaluate how the incident unfolded and the factors involved. The military confirmed that no civilians were injured and that no civilian infrastructure sustained damage.
The event follows a similar occurrence in neighboring Lithuania on the same date, October 18. Lithuanian authorities found the wreckage of a suspected drone in the village of Juodžionys within the Pasvalys district. Lithuania reported that the aircraft entered its airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that the drone contained explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He noted that Ukraine expressed regret regarding the event. The Latvian military has not identified any further threats following the recovery of the debris.
