Oregon State University secured the services of its leading offensive weapon by signing freshman receiver Jesse Legree to a new contract. The Beavers announced the agreement on Friday, October 23, during a live broadcast on CBS Sports Network. This move resolved months of uncertainty regarding Legree's future after he led the nation in receiving production this season. The signing occurred after Legree's father posted a graphic promoting a "Legree Effect Decision Day" event, which fueled speculation about the player's intentions.
Legree's path to Corvallis began in 2023 when he arrived at Oregon State without offers from other Football Bowl Subdivision programs. At the time, the Beavers were rebuilding after the Pac-12 conference collapsed. JaMarcus Shephard, a former receivers coach at Alabama, had just taken over as head coach following the midseason firing of Trent Bray. General manager Eron Hodges reportedly told Shephard immediately upon his hiring that the program needed to recruit Legree. Legree became the first recruit Shephard contacted. Legree said he was likely headed to a historically Black college and university and viewed the offer as a "no-brainer."
The receiver has justified the investment with historic numbers. In seven games, he has accumulated 1,040 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He is the second player in 30 years to record at least 100 yards and a score in each of his team's first seven games, joining Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State from 2010. His production includes a 136-yard, one-touchdown performance against Houston and a 240-yard, two-touchdown game against Texas Tech. Oregon State lost both of those contests to ranked opponents but has won its last five games by a combined 25-point margin.
Shephard stated that Legree's representatives approached the school roughly four weeks before the announcement. He acknowledged that other programs expressed interest, describing them as "gold diggers" because they did not want Legree out of high school. Shephard noted that players no longer attend college for free and that the program intends to take care of its athletes. Legree cited his loyalty to Shephard as the primary factor in his decision to stay, despite living more than 2,000 miles from his family in Baltimore. He described Shephard as "like another father to me."
The signing follows a standard process where players must recommit each year, though a midseason news conference is rare. Legree said he missed his own signing day a year ago and wanted to experience the moment. He hopes the deal will attract more recruits and transfers. Shephard said having Legree back "will impact others" and demonstrates that Oregon State is building a competitive program.
Legree's contract ensures his presence for the next season. The Beavers will continue their campaign with their top receiver on the field. The signing was finalized on Friday, October 23, and broadcast live to a national audience. No further media events are scheduled at this time regarding the agreement.
