Brighton and Hove Albion travel to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to play Manchester City in the EFL Cup. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the match available on Paramount+. Betting odds favor City at minus 150, while the draw is priced at plus 300 and Brighton at plus 320. The tie serves as a major test for the Seagulls, who are currently challenging at the top of the Premier League table.

Brighton sits in third place in the league with a goal difference of plus 16. This metric is the best in the division, surpassing Manchester City, which holds a goal difference of plus 11. The club leads the league in goals scored and maintains the third-best defense. They also defeated Arsenal 3-0 earlier this season. A victory against City would place Brighton within two points of the league leaders, although Arsenal may extend their own lead before the match concludes.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler expressed confidence in his team's approach following a 2-0 loss at Liverpool. He criticized Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, stating that one team really tried to create and try to win the game. Brighton saw seven shots blocked during that match, and an early goal from Yasin Ayari or Charalampos Kostoulas might have altered the outcome. The result did little to disrupt the momentum of the squad.

The team’s performance is notable considering summer departures. Danny Welbeck, the top scorer last season, and Jan Paul van Hecke, who led the team in league minutes, both left the club. Carlos Baleba struggled with injuries last year but remains a key midfielder. Luka Vuskovic arrived to replace Van Hecke, while wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh have yet to play this season due to injuries.

Hurzeler has adjusted the lineup to address these gaps. Maxim De Cuyper has moved permanently to left back, bringing attacking energy to the position. Kostoulas and Diego Gomez were integrated gradually into the squad. Pascal Gross, aged 35, has recorded four assists and three goals in the league. According to Gradient data, Gross ranks in the 99th percentile for pressures leading to dangerous situations.

Brighton’s style is evident in their statistical dominance. They allow opponents just 7.6 passes per defensive action, the lowest in the league. Only Manchester City restricts opponents to fewer active possession minutes than Brighton’s 21.5. The team also leads the division in counterattacking goals, goals from corners, higher-value chances, and shots from outside the box.

Caveats exist regarding the sample size, which covers only eight matches. Brighton held a numerical advantage in two games against Aston Villa and Coventry, accounting for over 10% of their data. They also played 33 minutes with 10 men against Sunderland while maintaining a 1-0 lead. Their 23 goals far exceed their 16.2 expected goals, with the Arsenal win relying on long-range strikes from Gross and Kostoulas.

Defensively, Brighton have conceded 11.4 expected goals, benefiting from shot-stopping that may not be sustainable. They allow the third-highest expected goals per shot in the division, partly due to weak set-piece defense. Their expected goals against from open play stands at 0.117 per shot, which is 10% above the league average. Chelsea exposed this vulnerability by breaking the press early in the season.

Analysts view Brighton as well-positioned for a potential fifth English Champions League spot, especially if a sanction impacts Manchester City’s standing. Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford have similar expected goals figures but have converted them into fewer points. The outcome against City on Wednesday, or a full-strength team on Saturday, will provide the clearest indicator of Brighton’s current standing.
