Arsenal and Manchester City share the Premier League lead at 21 points each after a pair of results on Saturday erased the gap between the two clubs. Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium in north London, while Manchester City fell 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The league campaign had previously seen Manchester City maintain a perfect record until this weekend. The visitors to Birmingham lost for the first time in the league, a result that opened the door for their rivals. Arsenal capitalized on the opportunity to level the standings after eight matches played by both teams.
Arsenal's match began with a quick goal in the seventh minute. Martin Odegaard delivered a corner that Jordan Pickford saved initially, but Ezri Konsa tapped in the rebound from close range. That goal marked Konsa's first for the club and ended a 13-game drought for set-piece goals. In the 68th minute, Ben White crossed the ball to Gabriel, who headed it home to make it 2-0. Both players were making milestone 200th appearances for their respective competitions.
At Aston Villa, Nicolas Jackson scored twice to secure the win for Unai Emery's side. Jackson put Villa ahead in the sixth minute following a defensive error by Marc Guehi. Erling Haaland equalized for Manchester City after halftime with a header from a free kick, but Jackson restored the lead in the 60th minute. The victory moved Aston Villa to sixth place with 11 points and gave them a third consecutive league win against Manchester City.
Manchester City is currently awaiting the decision on an appeal regarding an independent commission's finding that the club committed 114 breaches of financial rules. The club has denied wrongdoing in that matter. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to move to 12th place, with Mathys Tel scoring the final goal in the 87th minute. Fulham also won, beating Coventry City 1-0 through a goal by Oscar Bobb in the 80th minute.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was not quoted in the immediate aftermath, but player Ezri Konsa emphasized the need for consistency. "We are champions and to be champions you've got to win games consistently," Konsa said. "This is our home, and we want to win as many games here as possible."
