Bayern Munich leads the Bundesliga by one point over Freiburg, a gap that could shift when the two sides meet on Sunday. The match will be conducted without head coach Vincent Kompany, who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Director of Sport Max Eberl confirmed on Saturday that Kompany is in stable condition. The 40 year old collapsed on the training pitch the previous day after returning to the dugout for a home match against Arsenal. Eberl stated that medical examinations are ongoing to determine the specific nature of the virus.

The club has not established a return date for the former Belgium captain. Eberl explained that the team is prioritizing a full understanding of the illness before setting a recovery schedule. He noted that the absence will last for weeks rather than days.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks, an English national, will lead the team for the trip to Freiburg. Danks conducted the Saturday news conference in Kompany's place. He revealed that he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday to check on his health, ensuring there were no football discussions during the call.

Danks said the coaching staff will operate as a unit to maintain the club's momentum. He confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will miss the match after returning from bereavement leave on Tuesday. Kimmich has been absent from training since that date.

Eberl said the club decided against requesting a postponement of the Bundesliga fixture. He argued that a strong performance and a positive result would be the most effective way to support Kompany's recovery. The club had previously postponed a second team match on Friday following the collapse.

Bayern's next major fixture is a Champions League match in Madrid against Atletico on November 3. Kompany has acknowledged that he ignored early warning signs of the illness. He stated that his body eventually forced him to stop playing after he caught a severe virus the previous week.
