A shooting incident in the northern suburbs of Paris on Friday resulted in one death and five injuries, with French officials classifying the event as both a terrorist act and a racially motivated crime. The attack took place in Trappes, a working-class district with a significant immigrant population, and ended after approximately fifteen minutes when police took the suspect into custody. The immediate aftermath has prompted a thorough review of security protocols in the region.

The assailant, a thirty-nine-year-old man identified as Kevin T., drove through the communities of Trappes and La Verriere while firing an automatic weapon. He targeted specific locations, including a petrol station, a medical centre, and a children's playground. Local representative Laurent Mazaury noted that the suspect told officers he intended to kill foreigners. Mazaury characterized the individual as a racist, while French media outlets reported that the deceased victim, named Pengo Bassio Wangi, was a young Black man. Among the injured was a woman wearing a headscarf and a twelve-year-old girl of North African descent who was also wearing one. Prosecutors stated that three of the five wounded individuals are in critical condition. The girl’s mother explained that her daughter was shot eight times and has since been transported to a children’s hospital for surgery.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez affirmed that the investigation was ongoing but emphasized that the incident was clearly a terrorist crime. Investigators are currently determining if the suspect acted in concert with a specific terrorist group. A member of the suspect’s immediate family has also been placed in custody. Police officials revealed that an older-style semiautomatic weapon dating from the World War II era, along with tear gas grenades, was discovered in the suspect’s vehicle. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu described the situation as very serious and confirmed that all available judicial and security resources were mobilized.

President Emmanuel Macron labeled the incident a racist terrorist attack, describing it as a turning point for the nation. He reiterated France’s commitment to combating racism in all its forms. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes who has Moroccan roots, stated that the gunman fired at random with the aim of causing a bloodbath. He described the attack as objectively racist and likely Islamophobic, noting that the victims could have been his own relatives. Rabeh suggested that the wounded girl’s crime was probably being of colour. The girl’s mother questioned why a child would be treated so harshly and asked if her daughter was targeted for her headscarf, stressing her right to build a life in France.

The violence occurred during a period of heightened social tension, with cost-of-living and student protests gripping the country. Authorities plan to deploy seventy thousand police officers for demonstrations expected on Saturday. Some far-right figures have attributed the unrest to Muslim youths. Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, condemned the shooting as barbaric. However, Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through rhetoric. They pointed to Le Pen’s campaign proposal to fine women wearing headscarves in public. Rabeh called politicians making negative comments about Muslims criminals, while the French Muslim Council stated that promoters of anti-Muslim hate speech have blood on their hands.

Recent data indicates a rise in anti-Muslim hostility across the continent. Last week, the European Parliament voted to adopt a strategy against Islamist entryism and the Muslim Brotherhood network. Researcher Farid Hafez of Georgetown University’s Bridge Initiative described this as a major symbolic victory for anti-Muslim forces. Amnesty International reported in June that Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached emergency levels. The EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency notes that one in two Muslims in Europe faces racial discrimination. In the United States, California’s attorney general reported a fifty-four percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2025, rising from twenty-four to thirty-eight incidents.
