Life in parts of western Hebron has changed significantly this weekend. Residents in two specific neighborhoods were asked to leave their homes so security forces could search the area. This move allows soldiers to look for weapons and hidden infrastructure without the risk of civilians being caught in the middle. The area is known as a hotspot for militant activity, and the evacuation is a temporary measure to aid the search.

The military began clearing out the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha districts on Friday evening. These are densely populated areas within the Palestinian urban part of the city. People who wanted to leave were allowed to exit through specific checkpoints run by the Shin Bet and the IDF. Officials explained that moving residents out of buildings makes it safer to inspect family homes and surrounding land thoroughly. They are looking for things like explosives labs, weapons caches, and other terrorist infrastructure.

This operation is a direct response to a deadly shooting attack that happened on Friday. Two soldiers were killed at Yehuda Junction. They were St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem. The attack triggered a large-scale military response that is still ongoing. The goal is to restore order and remove any structures that could provide cover or threats to troops.

The demolition work began on Saturday near the northern entrance to Hebron. Troops and Civil Administration personnel took down illegal buildings and infrastructure. These structures were close to where the shooting took place. The military stated that these demolitions are meant to enforce law and order. They also aim to eliminate potential security threats that the buildings posed.

Security officials identified the two gunmen as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba. Both men were affiliated with Hamas. They came from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. According to IDF assessments, about 2,000 residents in the area belong to the Ja'aba clan. This clan is linked to Hamas and is the group from which the attackers originated. The military views this area as a center for Hamas operatives in Hebron.

The broader counterterrorism campaign is led by the Judea Brigade. It involves a large number of forces. Troops from the Duvdevan and Maglan units are participating. So are soldiers from the Paratroopers Brigade and Givati reconnaissance reservists. Border Police are also involved. The Shin Bet security agency is providing intelligence guidance to coordinate these efforts.

During the operation, soldiers searched roughly 200 locations. They checked these spots for weapons and signs of terrorist activity. So far, they have arrested 10 suspects. The scale of the search reflects the military's concern about the security situation in the region. The thoroughness of the sweep is intended to find anything that might have been missed in previous checks.

The next step involves a situational assessment scheduled for Saturday. Leaders will use this meeting to decide if the operation should expand further. In the meantime, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, who commands the IDF's West Bank Division, has already widened the scope of activities. He has ordered more arrests and searches in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm. Additional locations in Samaria are also being targeted.

These expanded moves are happening against a backdrop of heightened tension. There are growing concerns about efforts by Hamas leadership abroad to organize attacks. These planned actions are thought to be timed ahead of upcoming elections. The military is acting proactively to prevent such incidents. The situation remains fluid as forces continue to comb through the affected areas.

For ordinary people in the region, the immediate impact is the disruption to daily life in the evacuated zones. Residents are staying with relatives or in temporary arrangements while the searches take place. The military expects to return residents once the area is deemed safe. Until then, the focus remains on finding any remaining threats and maintaining a strong security presence.
