A tragic accident on the island of Bimini has claimed the life of a British tourist who attempted to rescue her children from dangerous waters.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that a 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire died on Tuesday following an incident in the sea. The force has opened a formal investigation into the sudden death to determine the precise circumstances.

Here are the key facts emerging from the preliminary police report regarding the incident.

First, the sequence of events began while the woman, her husband, and their two sons were snorkelling near the southern point of the island. A powerful current suddenly swept both boys away from the group. The mother immediately entered the water to reach her children and was subsequently carried off by the same strong current.

Second, the two boys were successfully rescued from the water and are believed to be safe. The woman was also pulled from the sea by rescuers. She was brought to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where bystanders and responders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an effort to revive her.

Third, the woman was transported to a local clinic shortly after the rescue. Despite the medical team's efforts to stabilize her, a local doctor pronounced her dead. Police noted that she was found unresponsive at the ferry dock shortly after 10:00 am, at which point officers from the Alice Town police station were alerted to the situation.

In the broader context of the investigation, authorities have stated that foul play is not currently suspected. The death appears to be the result of the natural forces at play in the ocean rather than criminal activity. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death and provide further clarity to the family.

The UK Foreign Office has acknowledged the tragedy and expressed its condolences to the family. A spokesperson said that their thoughts are with the relatives of the British woman who has died. Officials confirmed that they are in active contact with local Bahamian authorities to coordinate support for the family during this difficult time.

This incident highlights the risks associated with recreational water activities in the Bahamas, particularly in areas known for variable currents. The family is now working with local and national officials to manage the next steps in the legal and administrative processes.

The community in Stapleford has been notified of the passing. While details are still being finalized, the focus remains on supporting the husband and sons as they navigate the immediate aftermath of the event on Bimini.
