Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that conditions in Oleshky, a town in Kherson Oblast under Russian occupation, are dire. He stated in a video address that an arrangement to open access to the area should take effect soon. Russian forces have mined the roads in the temporarily occupied part of the region, creating barriers for relief efforts.
Negotiations regarding the town have continued for some time at various levels. Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine will do its part and relies on American mediation to make the process work. Kyiv aims to conduct a humanitarian operation to restore access, deliver essential supplies, and allow residents to leave the combat zone.
The general staffs of Ukraine and Russia announced on Friday evening that a ceasefire will take effect in a designated area starting the night of October 27. This pause is specifically intended to facilitate the humanitarian operation in Oleshky. The White House stated that US First Lady Melania Trump secured the truce, describing a humanitarian disaster as currently unfolding in the town. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia agreed to the ceasefire to allow the mission to proceed.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, specified that the humanitarian operation is scheduled for October 29. The ceasefire will be in force during this period to ensure safe passage for aid workers and vehicles.
