Roope Hintz scored the winning goal with 3:47 remaining in overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night at American Airlines Center. The goal came after Miro Heiskanen turned a defensive stop into a breakaway chance.
Jason Robertson blocked a scoring attempt by Winnipeg to start the sequence. Heiskanen immediately passed the puck to Hintz, who beat the goaltender to end the game. Robertson had earlier given Winnipeg a chance on a turnover, but his block set up the final play.
The Stars relied heavily on their top two defensemen. With Esa Lindell scratched, Heiskanen played 29:20. Thomas Harley logged 28:27. The next Dallas defender, Lian Bichsel, played 17:47. Nils Lundkvist, Tyler Myers, and Kyle Capobianco also contributed on the back end.
Dallas trailed for most of the regulation period. Matt Johnson scored early in the second period, and Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor added goals to put Winnipeg ahead. Hintz tied the game with a power play goal with two minutes left in the third period.
The Stars outshot the Jets 38-19. Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves for Winnipeg to keep the game close. Heiskanen recorded five shots, one block, and the assist on the winning goal. Harley did not record a goal but finished with a plus-one rating.
The game did not provide a return date for Lindell or a permanent fix for the defensive rotation. Heiskanen and Harley carried the defensive load for the duration of the contest.
