Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London without a single trophy to show for the 2025-26 season, yet he remains a serious contender for soccer's most prestigious individual honor. The award carries no cash prize, but it significantly elevates a player's market value and global standing.

The French forward finished the year without club or international silverware. Real Madrid placed second in La Liga and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich. France finished fourth at the World Cup in North America, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match. Despite this lack of team success, Mbappe holds a collection of individual records that he believes justify the award.

His strongest case rests on his performance at the 2026 World Cup. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament, scoring 22 goals in 22 matches. This haul made him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, surpassing Lionel Messi, who is second with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history.. is something that really stands out," Mbappe said last month. When asked who he was voting for, he answered, "Myself."

Mbappe also led the scoring charts in both La Liga and the Champions League during the domestic season. He finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and recorded 15 goals in the Champions League. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me," he noted.

The main challenge for his bid is the absence of silverware, a factor that has favored his rivals. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga championship. In contrast, Real Madrid extended its drought without a major trophy to a second straight season under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.

Mbappe argues that individual brilliance is the primary metric for the award. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI. His club manager, Jose Mourinho, supported the view, stating, "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team."

Historical data suggests the odds are against him. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade won at least one major trophy in the award year. The 2025 winner, Ousmane Dembele, helped Paris Saint-Germain win their first Champions League title. Rodri, the previous winner, captured Euro 2024 and the Premier League. The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who scored 66 goals for club and country while his team finished as league runners-up. Mbappe, who placed third in 2023 and has received nine nominations, faces a slim but possible path to the top spot.

The ceremony will take place in London on Monday. The decision will weigh Mbappe's historic scoring records against the trophy-laden campaigns of his competitors.
